When I drove down Kedzie and I reached the 2500 block, I knew at least two things. First, it is as the sign above states, “ Mexico en Chicago.” Secondly, the festive and vibrant colors from the exterior of the huge property of Mi Tierra clearly indicate a non-stop fiesta.
Walking into the restaurant for Saturday lunch, the wait staff was all smiles and prepared to accommodate, and the colorful decor brought that same warm feeling that I got outside. We started with the usual chips, salsa and margaritas. The chips were warm and the salsa was fresh. Nothing stood out about them though.
However, the drink was bigger and better that most margaritas made in Chicago. Fresh lime, Cazadores Reposados tequila, and almost built for two for a mere $6.50. The next time I come here, I will be taking the bus. I'm sure I'm missing something when I go to most Mexican restaurants because I never order appetizers, but the chips and salsa are usually enough before the main event.
We ordered the Parrillada de Carnes, which is a dish for two, served on a tabletop grill, with carne asada, beef short ribs, pork chops, chicken, Mexican chorizo, green onions and cheese, along with pico de gallo, refried beans and warm tortillas. Everything on this grill was hot, tender, well-seasoned, spicy and true to Mexican cuisine all for $23. Mi Tierra definitely gives you bang for your buck. There was also great live music, and for $10, the band will come to your table and play a song for you.
This restaurant is a great place to bring a date as well. Romantic? Not so much, but you will have fun with the great food, drinks and lively atmosphere. I came ill-prepared because I wasn't quite that hungry for lunch, but no worries, most of it came home with me and I thoroughly enjoyed it later for dinner. I'll surely be back for dinner and more drinks and entertainment. Next go ‘round, I'll try something from their tempting seafood menu.
