No summer wardrobe is complete unless you factor in a sizeable integer of shorts. Traditionally, men haven’t had very many options when it came to this seasonal essential. At one time our only choices were athletic, swim and Bermuda shorts. The latter came in a wide variety of fabrics, colors and patterns, but lacked the distinctive array of alternatives women have. Back in the day, there were three things that you could count on—they were either too short, too tight or both. New clothes were at a premium when I was growing up, so we used to take an old pair of slacks or jeans and cut them off at the knees, and then slash them into strips up to about mid thigh. We thought the strips helped keep us cool by flapping in the wind; and even though some thought they looked like slave pants, everyone had at least one pair. It was as if we all had just stepped out of a Mark Twain novel, enjoying our carefree days of summer.
Slowly things began to change and menswear evolved. We started seeking more options in all aspects of our lives and fashion was near the top. As the 70s ended, the 80s ushered in a new sense of style, especially in the African-American community. The advent of hip-hop and b-boy culture brought about an explosion of colors and patterns while introducing a more relaxed sense of comfort and ease. Sure, wild designs and colors existed during the previous decades; however, everything they were just way too tight. Arguably, the shift was set in motion when Michael Jordan took to the hardwood. MJ changed the game. Men’s shorts grew in length and got baggier. Today men’s shorts vary from versions that are slightly modified translations of traditional styles to cutting edge revelations boarding on the absurd. As you continue crafting your summer wardrobe, here are a few guidelines that will help navigate you through your fashion journey.
For casual everyday or weekend wear, you can’t go wrong with cargo shorts. They look great, and everything you need is just a pocket away. Choose all cotton or cotton/ramie blends for durability. Your color pallet should range from solids, denim or military-inspired shades in khaki, olive drab, parchment and camo. These will pair well with polos, tees, camp or button-down shirts. You’ll also discover cargos in a wide variety of plaids in dizzying color combinations.
If you’re looking for versatile options that transfer easily from casual to dress and will keep you cool during those steamy dog days of summer, try cotton seersucker with a plain front. White with blue pinstripes are customary; however, be sure to incorporate tone on tone or black stripes just to flip the script. Seersuckers can also be found in solids and cuffed with pleats; I’d pass on the pleats, you’ll look like you’re trying too hard. For those audacious souls with a little more flair, opt for madras prints, nautical plaids or vivid pastels.
When it comes time to step up your game, especially on the links or while cruising, microfiber golf shorts should be in play. Round out your choices with Gingham, linen, sheeting and cotton gauze. These can be nicely coupled with sweater vests, cardigans and sportcoats, or dressed up further by adding a tie. If you’re a fashion novice, don’t try this at home. Please consult an expert.
Length and cut are where most men err in their selections. If your shorts are too long and cut too full, you run the risk of looking like you have on a skirt; even worse, if too tight, people will think you’re wearing capris. Now there are shorts that come very close to being “manpris,” but only a select few can pull off this look. The actual term for these are judo shorts. However, you’ll veer away from this category when they’re slim cut with tapered legs, venturing into unfamiliar waters. When choosing a proper length, try the two-three rule. Never go below the ankle or more than two to three inches above the knee (except for activewear). In terms of fullness, your shorts shouldn’t be tight under any circumstances or as full as slacks.
Above all go with what you like and what’s most comfortable. Do your homework and choose the styles that fit you best.
