I've gone to too many funerals when I should have gone to high school graduations. Indeed, childhood mental issues are so often taken as 'just a phase' and the line between a real problem and a temporary issue can be very vague. Learned this all too well in my own family and friends... and thankfully the knowledge led me to openness with my own kids to the point that one did come to me when it seemed to that child something was 'not right.' Shake off any old school notions that mental health is 'failure of parenting'. Better a trip to a doctor just in case, than a trip to the morgue.
