Services set for South Side alderman’s mother

Defender Staff Report

Kathryn Louis Dowell, mother of Alderman Pat Dowell (3rd), will be eulogized Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Daniel Chapel AME Zion Church, 15230 3rd Avenue in south suburban Phoenix. She died Saturday.

Dowell said “Kay” (as she was fondly called) would be remembered for her pleasant smile and love for her family.

Born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, third child of the late Mary Hill-McFarland and Samuel McFarland, Kathryn was the loving sibling to two brothers, Samuel and Franklin who preceded her in death.  At an early age her family moved to Jamaica, New York.

After completing her schooling in Jamaica, New York, Kathryn decided to pursue a career in nursing.  She graduated with honors from New York City Community College and Long Island University.

Kathryn was united in marriage to the late Norman T. Dowell on October 14, 1952.  They were blessed with one daughter Patricia.  Kathryn enjoyed a loving marriage, sharing their love and joy with their loved ones and many friends.

She became a faithful member of the Allen A.M.E. Church under the leadership of former Congressman Rev. Floyd H. Flake.

After 30 years of working for the New York City Health Department, she retired and moved to Pikesville, Maryland and joined the Union Bethel A.M.E. Church.

In July 1995, she relocated to Illinois to be near her family and joined Daniel Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in south suburban Phoenix.

Kathryn leaves to cherish her loving memory, a devoted daughter, Patricia, one grandson Justin Cerasoli and his father Paul Cerasoli, her special friend Al Cook and his family, Mickey Johnson whom she affectionately called her son-in-law, three generations of special nieces and nephews, and a host of cousins and dear friends.
