Consumers cautioned against cold weather scams

Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) — Scam artists can use severe weather as a chance to prey on consumers.

The City of Chicago is warning residents to beware of people who show up with unsolicited offers of help.

The city says be suspicious if someone contacts you unexpectedly and asks if you need assistance. Don't provide any personal information to them.

The city also offers these tips:

Ask family, friends or trusted individuals for referrals if you need help.

Don't pay in cash. If a company takes only cash, it may not be a company you want to do business with.

Always get written estimates of any service that's being provided. Don't rely on a verbal contract. Ask for and check references.

Do not pay for a job in advance.
