*1914: Heavyweight boxer Jersey Joe Walcott was born.

*1919: Baseball giant Jackie Robinson was born.

*1931: Baseball great Ernie Banks was born.

*1934: Etta Moten, first Black female performer at the White House, sang for President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

*1962: Samuel Gravely became first Black to command a U.S. warship.
