CHICAGO (AP) — More than 40 school districts, cities and faith-based organizations in suburban Chicago have received grants totaling $4 million for obesity prevention programs.
The money comes from a federal grant to the Cook County Department of Public Health and the Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago.
The one-time funding is aimed at improving access to healthy foods and creating safe, convenient places for walking and biking. Programs that promote breastfeeding or increase services for at-risk adults are also targets of the funding.
Among the 41 grantees are school districts in Arlington Heights, Chicago Ridge, Cicero, Harvey and Oak Lawn.
Cities and villages awarded grants include Berwyn, Blue Island, Oak Park, Schaumburg and Tinley Park.
Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park is also a grantee.
