Chicago boy shot by elderly woman gets probation

Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) — A 12-year-old boy who was shot by an elderly woman after he threw bricks at her has been sentenced to a year of probation.

Juvenile Court Judge Andrew Berman on Wednesday also ordered the boy to perform 50 hours of community service, undergo counseling and stay away from the woman who shot him.

The boy and a 13-year-old co-defendant pleaded guilty last month to aggravated assault of a senior citizen and criminal damage to property.

The woman, 68-year-old Margaret Matthews, shot at the pair after they lobbed bricks at her and her South Side home.

The 12-year-old was shot in the shoulder. The other boy, not yet sentenced, wasn't hurt.

Matthews didn't attend the sentencing. However, in a statement read by prosecutors, she blamed the parents for the boys' actions.
