CHICAGO (AP) — It's not at all clear Rahm Emanuel will be able to convince the Illinois Supreme Court to put him back on Chicago's mayoral ballot.
An appellate court shocked observers Monday by
striking his name. Emanuel told reporters later he's confident he'll prevail in
the higher court.
But legal experts say the seven supreme-court
justices normally aren't inclined to overturn such lower court rulings.
Appellate litigation attorney Christopher Keleher
('KEL-ah-her) says the short time Emanuel has to argue his case before early
voting starts Jan. 31 makes it that much harder.
Keleher says it's not inconceivable that Emanuel
prevails. But he says the recent White House chief of staff is now "behind
the eight ball" legally speaking.
Keleher says his best guess is Emanuel loses his
state Supreme Court appeal.
