Chicago mayor picks 3 interim aldermen

Associated Press
CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Mayor Richard Daley has named three interim members of the City Council to serve until next month's election —including the son of a former alderman.

At a news conference Wednesday, Daley introduced Timothy Cullerton to replace Tom Allen, who left to become a judge. Cullerton is a member of a family well known in Chicago political circles.

Shirley Newsome completes the term of Toni Preckwinkle, who was elected Cook County Board president.

Jason Ervin will complete the term of Ed Smith, who retired.

Newsome, a longtime community activist, is not running in February, but Ervin and Cullerton are.

Ervin is Maywood's village manager. Cullerton spent 30 years with the city who retired in 2003 as First Deputy Building Commissioner.

The appointments must be approved by the City Council.
