*The seventh and final day of Kwanzaa, “Imani” (faith), is observed.

*1804:            Jean Jacques Dessalines proclaimed independence of Haiti.

*1808:            International Slave Trade was abolished.

*1831:            First issue of the Liberator, an abolitionist newspaper, was published by William Lloyd Garrison.

*1863:            President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation; freed all slaves in slave states.

*1916:            First issue of the Journal of Negro History was published by Carter G. Woodson.

*1997:            Kofi Annan of Ghana named first Black secretary of United Nations.
