CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois state Sen. James Meeks says the remaining black candidates for Chicago mayor should get together and agree on a single person to run.
Meeks withdrew his candidacy this week with a statement that said blacks in Chicago are divided and other black candidates should drop out.
He offered more clarity Saturday, saying the other black candidates should chose just one person to run.
For weeks, there's been discussion of a so-called consensus black candidate in Chicago, where more than one-third of the city's 3 million people are black. The idea is that too many black candidates will split black votes and decrease the chance for representation.
Other black candidates include Congressmen Danny Davis and former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun.
Both say they plan to stay in the race.
