CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois' population grew more than 3 percent from 2000 to 2010.
U.S. Census Bureau officials released data from the 2010 count Tuesday.
Federal officials say Illinois has about 12.8 million people compared with 12.4 million in 2000, or about a 3.3 percent increase.
Demographic experts say generally that the central and southern parts of Illinois lost population while suburban Chicago areas grew.
Even though the state's population increased, the state will still lose one congressional seat. Census figures are used to reapportion the House's 435 districts to make them roughly equal in population, with each state getting at least one seat.
The South and West of the country had bigger population surges so Texas gains four new seats.
Illinois, and nine other states, lost seats.
