Professor Jacqueline Goldsby saw the realization of a dream unveiled this month at the University of Chicago's Library. The dream is a website called Uncovering New Chicago Archives Project (UNCAP).
The website will be hosted and maintained, in perpetuity, by the University of Chicago. Professor Goldsby's dream was several years in the making, from a time when she encountered many frustrating stumbling blocks searching for historical information on African-Americans in Chicago.
That frustration lead to action in the creation of the Mapping the Stacks Program. Mapping the Stacks sought ways to unveil Chicago's hidden African-American archives.
Professor Goldsby contacted many organizations, including the Chicago Defender, to offer the services of graduate students who would organize and catalog their collections. The hope was to eventually create UNCAP, a portal for students and scholars, that would provide finding aids on African-American historical images, documents and artifacts.
Some of the other organizations that are included on the portal are the South Side Community Art Center, DuSable Museum and the Chicago Public Library.
The Chicago Defender Archives can be found at: http://www.chicagodefender.com/flex-98-archives.html
