Madigan gives $1.2 million to 8 Ill. food banks

Associated Press
CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has given $1.2 million in settlement proceeds to the state's eight regional food banks.

Madigan says the money will help feed thousands of families across the state.

The cash comes from a $25 million settlement reached by Madigan's office, 22 other states and about a dozen vitamin manufacturers.

Illinois got nearly $1.4 million of the settlement. The court ordered that the money be used for improvements in health, nutrition or science.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository got the largest chunk of the $1.2 million with $655,000. The depository serves 650 agencies.

Depository officials estimate the number of people they've served increased by 36 percent from 2006 to 2009 to 678,000.
