48 legal experts say Emanuel has right to run

Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) — Nearly 50 former judges, law professors and legal experts have filed a brief saying Rahm Emanuel has the legal right to run for mayor of Chicago.

The brief filed Saturday says Emanuel meets the residency requirement for a mayoral run.

The law requires candidates to live in the city for at least a year before an election. Dozens have legally challenged Emanuel's residency and candidacy.

A decision on the matter is expected soon.

The 48 legal experts who signed on to the amicus brief compared Emanuel's move to Washington to serve as President Barack Obama's chief of staff to Abraham Lincoln's move to Washington to become the 16th president.

They say Lincoln didn't give up his ties to Illinois then, and Emanuel hasn't relinquished his now.
