'Driving Miss Daisy' stays on Broadway into spring

Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — James Earl Jones will be staying behind the wheel of "Driving Miss Daisy" for quite a bit longer.

Producers of the play by Alfred Uhry said Wednesday they are extending the show's run with its original cast until April 9. It also stars Vanessa Redgrave and Boyd Gaines and was originally expected to end Jan. 29.

In a joint statement, Jones, Redgrave and Gaines said: "We're all having such a wonderful time with each other and with Alfred's play. We are delighted to be continuing."

The play centers on a Jewish widow and her deepening friendship with her African-American chauffeur. The show has been virtually selling out the intimate, 800-seat Golden Theatre on 45th Street and commands one of the highest average ticket prices on Broadway.
