CFD talks fire safety as holiday, winter come

Defender Staff Report

With winter creeping in and the holiday season underway, the Chicago Fire Department is talking fire safety by pointing out potential household fire hazards.

More Blacks have been killed in residential fires since 2008 than any other ethnic group with most fatalities occurring on the South Side, according to CFD.

During a demonstration Monday at the Chicago Fire Academy drill yard on the near-West Side, fire officials pointed out how faulty space heaters and Christmas trees could pose a fire hazard for families.

Firefighters showed how easily a holiday tree could burn down a house if not properly cared for. Additionally, a faulty space heater could be a fire-starter as well, CFD showed.

Fire officials urged caution when dealing with live trees, which must stay properly hydrated.
