RYE, N.Y. (AP) — Community leaders in a suburb north of New York City plan to inventory grave sites and repair headstones at a noteworthy African-American cemetery where several black veterans are buried.
The one-acre cemetery in Rye was donated to the black community during segregation. It is maintained by the town, but there are concerns about the masonry and landscaping.
The Journal News reported that 30 civic and community leaders gathered Saturday to talk about plans to restore the cemetery. They plan to advertise the site to students and scholars interested in doing historical research.
Veterans of the Civil War and the two world wars are buried there.
The cemetery next to Greenwood Union Cemetery in the suburban town, about 34 miles northeast of New York City.
