CHICAGO (AP) — The Illinois Department of Insurance is receiving a $1.45 million federal grant to educate and protect health insurance consumers.
The department announced Thursday it has been awarded the funding under the new national health law, the Affordable Care Act. The department has received two other federal grants to help implement the law.
Department of Insurance Director Michael McRaith says the money will help educate consumers about their rights and protect them against unfair or abusive health insurer practices.
The department says it will be better able to track consumer problems, help people enroll in health insurance plans and help them file complaints and appeals.
