18 Illinois school districts to get state funds

Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) — Eighteen school districts across Illinois will share more than $270 million in state funding for construction and renovation projects.

Gov. Pat Quinn announced Wednesday which districts will receive the capital funding that was approved last year. Quinn says the money will help create 3,700 construction jobs, including 1,000 in Chicago. Schools in Chicago are set to receive more than $54 million.

The cash will pay for additions and renovations at existing schools and the construction of new buildings. Officials say the state funding combined with local matching dollars will help districts start projects worth more than $525 million.

Quinn made the announcement at a school on Chicago's South Side where improvements are already under way.
