Newsmakers gala recognizes achievements

Defender Staff Report

The Defender’s signature event, Newsmakers Awards and Scholarship Gala, honored seven people this year who have been exemplary in their craft.

Muhammad Ali was awarded a lifetime achievement honor and radio disc-jockey and philanthropist Tom Joyner was recognized as a national newsmaker.

They did not attend the soiree held in the Crystal Ballroom at the Hyatt Regency Chicago hotel, but the other honorees did, including actress LisaRaye McCoy who was given an award for her work in television. Aldermen Anthony Beale and Toni Preckwinkle were honored along with Chicago State University President Wayne Watson, Ph.D., and local film producer Barbara Allen. Journalist Micah Materre and actor Harry Lennix served as emcees for the event that also attracted businessmen and politicians.
