Illinois arts group seeks schools for poetry slam

Associated Press
CHICAGO (AP) — The Illinois Arts Council is inviting high schools and students to participate in a national poetry slam.

The Poetry Out Loud contest began with pilot programs in Chicago and Washington, D.C., and spread nationwide four years ago.

Students recite poems in class and winners advance to the school level, then state or regional level and finally to a national championship. State winners get $200 and a trip to the finals in Washington next April.

The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation run the program in partnership with state agencies. Schools should contact the Illinois Arts Council for information. The deadline is Dec. 15.
