New programs train future physician assistants

Associated Press
CHICAGO (AP) — New programs are springing up in Chicago to train students to be physician assistants.

The Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine launched its first physician assistant program in June. More than 1,000 people have applied to be part of the next class of 30 students for 2011.

Rush University and Malcom X College also have physician assistant programs.

Physician assistants are licensed health professionals who provide medical care with supervision from a physician.

In some rural areas where doctors are in short supply, PAs serve as the primary providers of health care. They confer with their supervising physicians and other medical professionals as needed and as required by law.
