A mock jazz funeral at LSU for budget cuts

Associated Press
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Wearing black and holding signs such as, "Goodbye LSU hello Louisiana State Community College," several hundred students, faculty and staff led a funeral march for education.

Billed as a jazz funeral, Thursday's event came one day after higher education officials learned that colleges' share of a $108 million state deficit from the last fiscal year could be as much as $34.7 million.

According to Friday's Advocate, many of those participating represented LSU foreign languages, music programs and the liberal arts. Apart from the signs and mock coffins for LSU and higher education, participants also waved German, Italian and Russian flags to represent some of the language offerings LSU is eliminating in response to cuts.
