Black men’s org hopes to award 1,500 college scholarships

Thousands of high school students will be vying for one of at least 1,500 college scholarships at the 8th annual College Scholarship Fair later this month.

Hosted by 100 Black Men of Chicago and presented by State Farm Insurance, the fair will take place Oct. 16 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the University of Illinois at Chicago, 725 W. Roosevelt Rd.

Nearly 5,000 high school upperclassmen from 155 schools throughout the Midwest are expected to attend. In addition to granting scholarships, some students will be granted college admissions on site.

“The fair has become an excellent vehicle, and for man, a life-changing event, especially for those who have felt a college education was unattainable,” said John S. Kendall, chairman of 16-year-old non-profit organization.

Students must bring school transcripts, college entrance exam scores, a letter of recommendation, personal essays and resumes to the fair.

Interested students are urged to attend a free hour-long college prep session Oct. 2 at 3:30 p.m. at Trinity Higher Education Corporation, 1947 W. 95th St.
