CHICAGO (AP) — Former Illinois Senate President Emil Jones is the latest politician circulating petitions for a possible Chicago mayoral run.
Jones tells the Chicago Tribune on Monday he is still "just looking" at getting into the scrum to succeed Mayor Richard Daley, who announced earlier this month he won't seek a seventh term.
Jones says many of his supporters want him to run. He says he is enjoying his retirement and will run only "if conditions are right." He didn't say what those conditions are.
Any number of politicians, including White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, have said they are looking at a possible run for the office.
The 74-year-old Jones was a mentor to President Barack Obama when Obama was a state senator. Jones retired in 2009, turning over his seat to his son.
