CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Three African-American men who were the first to attend the University of North Carolina will be honored in a series of events.
Thursday marks the 55th anniversary of a federal court decision which said the university could not prohibit Ralph Frasier, his brother, LeRoy Frasier, and John Brandon from attending the school.
After their applications were rejected, the UNC board of trustees passed a resolution barring the admission of blacks to the school. The men filed a lawsuit against the board, leading to the ruling on Sept. 16, 1955.
The three men will appear at a panel discussion on Friday at Stone Center Auditorium. A recognition dinner is scheduled for that evening, also at the center.
On Saturday, the men will be honored during the Georgia Tech-North Carolina football game.
