RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A historically black college in North Carolina's capital city is poised to name its first female president.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that Shaw University will introduce Irma McClaurin as its new president at a 10 a.m. news conference on Thursday. Board of Trustees Chairman Willie Gary announced the selection in a Sept. 6 letter to board members.
McClaurin, who replaces interim president Dorothy Yancy, was associate vice president for system academic administration at the University of Minnesota, and executive director of the Urban Research and Outreach/Engagement Center in Minneapolis. The organization's web site on Wednesday listed her name under the category "former staff." In an automatic reply to an e-mail seeking comment, McClaurin said she was on "study leave."
