Programs fighting kids' obesity can get new grants

Associated Press
CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois schools and groups involved in helping kids create hands-on anti-obesity programs are eligible for new Heroes grants.

United Health Group and Youth Service America are offering awards of up to $1,000 each to programs that get kids involved in tackling the childhood obesity epidemic.

The deadline for applying is Oct. 22. Applications are available online.

Last year, $9,500 in grants were awarded to 13 Chicago-based organizations. These included an award to Frederick A. Douglass Academy High School to teach students to analyze eating habits and develop healthy eating plans.

This is the third year of the UnitedHealth HEROES program.
