CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois public health officials say more than 1,000 people commit suicide in the state each year.
The Illinois Department of Human Services and the Illinois Department of Public Health want to call attention to that statistic by sponsoring Suicide Prevention Week this week.
Illinois public health director Dr. Damon Arnold says the goal of the awareness campaign is to illustrate how screening, identification and treatment "can save lives and guide persons in crisis towards recovery."
State health officials say people with mental health problems can recover. Health experts say one person can prevent a tragic death.
