Thousands attend conference launched by Jakes

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — More than 10,000 men attended what was billed as a "pep rally for God" in Fort Worth.

The 16th annual ManPower Conference wrapped up Saturday at the Convention Center. The conference was launched by Bishop T.D. Jakes, senior pastor of The Potter's House, a 30,000-member megachurch with congregations in Dallas and Fort Worth.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that the men-only event was designed to equip participants with tools to build strong marriages, increase self-confidence and take on community responsibilities.

A first-time event at this year's conference was a health fair designed to raise awareness about medical issues that affect a high percentage of African-American and Hispanic men. Volunteers provided blood pressure and cholesterol checks and free screenings.
