Defender Staff Report
The South Side church led by the Rev. Charles Jenkins won “Best Church Choir” at the 8th Annual Hoodie Awards in Las Vegas.

The awards, started in 2001 by comedian and radio personality Steve Harvey, honors the nation’s best independent community-based small businesses, educators and community leaders in several categories.

“It’s an honor to receive such an award for giving praises to God. On behalf of Fellowship M.B.C., I want to say thank you to (category sponsor) Glory Foods and Steve Harvey,” said Anita Wilson of Fellowship, who accepted the $1,500 prize during Saturday's awards ceremony.

Chicago-area finalists in other categories were Maurice “Ice” Culpepper for Best High School Teacher; the Rev. Michael Pfleger of St. Sabina Church for Best Community Leader; Dunbar Vocational Career Academy High School for Best High School; and Robinson’s Rib in west suburban Oak Park for Best Barbeque Place.
