Ceremony marks 55th anniversary of Till’s death

by Kathy Chaney

The Emmett Till Legacy Foundation honors the slain Chicago teen on the 55th anniversary of his death.

Till was murdered at age 14 in while visiting relatives in Money, Miss. on Aug. 28, 1955, reportedly by a group of white men. The teen allegedly whistled at a white woman. Till’s mother, the late Mamie Till Mobley, insisted on an open-casket funeral for her son.

The teen is buried at Burr Oak Cemetery in south suburban Alsip. In 2005, his body was exhumed for the first-ever autopsy.

The foundation will have a graveside wreath ceremony at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the cemetery, 4400 W. 127th St.
