Officials say school volunteering helps children

Associated Press
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — State officials say there's an easy way for parents to help their children perform better in school — volunteering.

The Illinois State Board of Education has urged parents to volunteer in their children's schools and monitor their academic progress, especially as a new school year starts.

State Superintendent of Education Christopher Koch (cook) says even a few hours a year can enhance a child's learning experience.

Ideas include reading in a classroom, helping teachers organize classrooms and chaperoning field trips.

Many Illinois districts have already started classes for this academic year, including East St. Louis Schools and Springfield Public Schools.

Chicago Public Schools, which is the nation's third-largest district, starts Sept. 7.
