Feds OK $17.5 million in disaster aid for Ill.

Associated Press
CHICAGO (AP) — Federal officials have approved $17.5 million in disaster assistance for seven Illinois counties hit by recent flooding.

Carroll, Cook, DuPage, Jo Daviess, Ogle, Stephenson and Winnebago counties had major flooding from July 22 through Aug. 7.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has gotten more than 21,500 applications for assistance.

A federal disaster declaration means the counties are eligible for funds to help residents and municipalities to recover.

Grants can be used for temporary housing and home repair and low-cost loans.

FEMA is urging residents and business owners to apply for aid if they sustained damage or losses.

Gov. Pat Quinn declared 12 counties state disaster areas, making them eligible for state assistance.
