CHICAGO (AP) — Gov. Pat Quinn has signed legislation aimed at improving the care provided by ambulance services.
Quinn signed House Bill 5183 at a Chicago hospital Saturday.
The new law calls for the Illinois Department of Public Health to set up standards for ambulance services.
The standards will cover staffing, education, licensure and treatment, among other issues.
The law also allows the health department to administer the Illinois emergency medical technician exam so that EMTs won't have to take the more expensive national test.
And the law lets the health department make licensing decisions about emergency service personnel convicted of certain felonies.
