Chicago begins voluntary emergency registry

Associated Press
CHICAGO (AP) — The city of Chicago has started a new registry to better inform emergency responders about the needs of seniors and those with disabilities during emergencies.

The city calls the program the Voluntary Emergency Assistance Registry for People with Disabilities and Seniors. Mayor Richard Daley has urged senior citizens and the disabled to sign up for the registry. The mayor's office says residents can sign up by dialing 311 or going online to the city's website at cityofchicago.org/voluntaryregistry.

The mayor says the program is important so fire crews and police officers have "accurate information to better assist people in emergencies based on their needs."
