CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Residents in Champaign will soon have fast access to crime information.
Champaign Police Lt. Joe Gallo says real-time crime maps are to be available online in the next several months along with the locations, types and times crime happened. Users also can received personalized e-mails with crime notifications.
Police say the information is thanks to software called CrimeView, which will cost about $57,000. The department also is to get an "intelligence analyst," who will earn between about $41,000 and $52,000 a year.
A state grant will pay for the software and the analyst.
Gallo says the information gives officers more tools to gather and analyze crime data and hopefully, lead to a reduction in crime.
