Military leave extended to children, grandparents

Associated Press
CHICAGO (AP) — Gov. Pat Quinn has signed legislation to allow the children and grandparents of active duty servicemembers to take unpaid leave before a deployment.

Under the bill, employers with more than 50 workers have to let the adult children and grandparents of a deploying servicemember take up to 30 days of unpaid leave.

The bill amends the state's Family Military Leave Act. The act currently only covers spouses and parents.

Quinn also signed a bill to let veterans get specialty license plates at no additional cost to the existing registration fee.

Both laws take effect Jan. 1.
