Chicago’s homeless population recently shrank thanks to a federal grant the Chicago Housing Authority received to provide housing vouchers to 100 homeless veterans.
The CHA received $798,300 to fund the vouchers as part of a $58.6 million grant from the Veteran’s Affairs Supportive Housing program. The program, housed within the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, aims to reduce the number of homeless veterans across the country.
“Though they served and sacrificed so much for our country, too many of our veterans find themselves on the streets and in homeless shelters,” Shaun Donovan, HUD secretary, said in a statement. “Thankfully, these vouchers will provide a more permanent solution to housing and services these veterans need.”
The north suburban Waukegan Housing Authority received $203,805 to fund 25 vouchers, and Donovan said he expects HUD to provide a total of $225 million this year to sustain approximately 30,000 rental assistance vouchers nationwide.
