Jackson: Suspension of Rockford officer not enough

Associated Press

ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — The Rev. Jesse Jackson says the 30-day suspension of a Rockford police officer involved in the 2009 shooting death of an unarmed man is a "mere slap on the wrist."

Jackson sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder this week asking for the federal investigation and prosecution of officers Oda Poole and Stan North.

Federal officials are already reviewing the Aug. 24 shooting of Mark Anthony Barmore at a church day care center.

Barmore, who was wanted for questioning in a domestic abuse case, was shot in front of children.

He was black and both officers are white.

Poole is suspended for 30 days, and the discipline for North is pending.

Independent consultants say the officers violated department policy and training.
