Illinois residents urged to prepare for heat

Associated Press
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois emergency and weather experts say residents should prepare for the heat during July — historically the hottest month in the state.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency says most of Illinois' extreme temperature records have been set during July. The hottest month on record was July 1936.

The agency says heat is responsible for more weather-related deaths than all other weather combined. National Weather Service statistics from the office in Lincoln show there have been 970 heat-related deaths in the state since 1995.

Heat-related illnesses include heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Experts suggest residents drink plenty of fluids and avoid overexertion or strenuous activities when it's extremely hot.
