Rockford police shooting under review by feds

Associated Press
ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — Federal officials say they're reviewing the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man by two white police officers inside a Rockford daycare.

U.S. attorney's office spokesman Randall Samborn says federal prosecutors, the Justice Department and the FBI have been reviewing the case since early this year to determine if more investigation is warranted.

Last August, the police officers chased 23-year-old Mark Anthony Barmore into a church-run daycare filled with children. Authorities say Barmore was shot after a struggle over a police weapon.

But witnesses say he surrendered, and the incident led to racial tensions in the city.

A grand jury and Illinois State Police found the shooting was justified. But an independent review concluded the officers violated police department policies.
