Former inmate to sue Burge over alleged torture

Associated Press
CHICAGO (AP) — A man who says convicted former Chicago police Lt. Jon Burge abused him into falsely confessing to murder is suing the decorated officer.

Ronald Kitchen's lawyers say they plan to file a civil suit Thursday, three days after a federal jury convicted Burge of lying about the torture of suspects.

Burge had pleaded not guilty to perjury and obstruction of justice charges.

Kitchen was convicted in the 1988 murders of five people. The charges against him were dismissed last year, and he was released from custody after 21 years in prison, 13 of them on death row.

Kitchen has alleged that Burge and other officers repeatedly kicked and beat him in order to make him confess.

Burge has denied ever participating in or witnessing the abuse of suspects.
