Funeral scheduled for Chicago jazz saxophonist

CHICAGO (AP) — Funeral services have been scheduled for legendary jazz saxophonist Fred Anderson.

He died Thursday at age 81.

A wake is scheduled on Tuesday evening at Leak and Sons Funeral Chapel in Chicago.

Anderson opened the Velvet Lounge jazz club in Chicago in 1982. It eventually became known as one of the cradles of contemporary jazz.

The Louisiana-born Anderson, who played the tenor sax, began widely popular in the 1990's. He became a regular on the jazz-festival circuit in the United States and Europe.
