New president chosen for Chicago Teachers Union

Associated Press
A chemistry teacher has unseated two-term Chicago Teachers Union president Marilyn Stewart after a run-off election.

Karen Lewis won the election on Friday and said at a news conference Saturday that she would oppose proposed job cuts and increases in class sizes. Lewis received applause from a group of union members at King College Prep High School on the South Side.

Stewart said in a statement that she promises to support Lewis. Lewis says the union is unified and "poised to reclaim power."

The Chicago Board of Education plans a Tuesday meeting to consider giving schools the power to lay off teachers and increase class sizes.
