Behind every man is a great woman, according to the age-old phrase, and behind the church pastor is the first lady.
The Chicago Defender will pay tribute this month to 50 women who tirelessly serve their respective church congregation and the African American community each day with no expectation of reward or praise.
“The Defender chose to honor these extraordinary partners of the men who lead our religious community because of the daily work they do in our community without being singled out for recognition or thanks. They provide support to the mission of their individual churches in many ways through their interaction with the women, and in many cases the youths of their congregations. They provide counseling and mentorship,” said Michael House, president of the Defender.
The first annual Salute to First Ladies, to be hosted June 26 by Pam Morris, Effie Rolfe and Art Norman, will be highlighted by keynote speaker Jaqueline Jackson of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition. There will also be a special performance by Felton Offard of Shekinah Glory Ministry.
“They (first ladies) are visibly running programs. That's the face you see other than the pastor's. Their presence speaks volumes. It's often known that the pastor is the leader and is always honored. Whether it's an anniversary or some other celebration, but how often do we take time to appreciate the women by their side. This is a rare and exciting honor, especially of this magnitude for our first ladies,” said Morris
