Gov. Pat Quinn says the state is moving forward with a plan to sell a northwestern Illinois prison to the federal government but he says it's "less likely" it will house Guantanamo Bay detainees.
Quinn's comments Friday came after action this week by the House Armed Services Committee. The committee unanimously approved a 2011 national defense authorization bill that prohibits using money to build or modify facilities in the United States for Gitmo detainees.
The Democratic governor says the committee's action doesn't throw a wrench into any deal. The underused Thomson Correctional Center could still be used as a federal prison to house other inmates.
Quinn says he expects a deal for the prison to be done this year. The state is in the process of having the prison appraised.
