Ill. tech school gets $5 million smart grid grants

Associated Press
The Illinois Institute of Technology is getting more than $5 million in grants to train workers in "smart grid" technologies.

Officials say the mix of state and federal money will be used to train more than 49,000 teachers, students, union workers and power industry employees.

Gov. Pat Quinn says the training will create a pipeline of workers who are trained in 21st century technology.

Smart grid is the name given to a digital technology system for distribution of electricity to consumers. Advocates say it improves the regulation of power demand and supply.

IIT is based in Chicago.
